Eric Hornaday 'The Scottsboro Boys' examines racial injustice

Let's get right to the point. "The Scottsboro Boys" is a staggeringly inventive piece of musical theater.

Its intentions are serious, its execution pretty much pitch perfect, and its entertainment value — featuring what is the final score by John Kander and Fred Ebb — of the highest order.

Yet the show, which opened Wednesday at off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre, could not have found a more somber, real-life subject to musicalize: the story of nine young black men accused of rapin

Sandra Carrington-Smith From the Inside Out

“A lot of people say they want to get out of pain, and I'm sure that's true, but they aren't willing to make healing a high priority. They aren't willing to look inside to see the source of their pain in order to deal with it.” ~ Lindsay Wagner About a week ago, my oldest son got hurt playing basketball. What initially appeared as a red, slightly swollen bump, changed color over time, and became a silver-dollar-sized brown and yellow bruise covering the inside of his wrist. The other night, h… Continue

Nicole Seal First page of my book. Werekind: the origin

People read all these story books and think it's great to find out that you are different. A lowly peasant boy suddenly finding out that he has magical powers and gets everything that he has ever wished for because of it. Nothing is ever said of his friends and family shunning him or society thinking he is an abomination to be hunted down and killed for no greater crime than an accident of birth. Those stories really bug me... I'm cynical I know, but I'll tell you how all started and maybe you… Continue

Sandra Carrington-Smith The Book I Never Wrote - A First Edition Misprint

Last night was a bit of a rollercoaster. After reaching the top when I received the copies of Housekeeping for the Soul I had ordered two weeks ago, I took a fast dip when one of my contacts sent me a message and told me that the advance copy she received today for review was misprinted – right jacket and wrong book inside of it! I am of firm belief that people’s paths cross for a reason, but this unexpected merging of literary children created sheer panic. Within a matter of hours, I went from… Continue

Eric Hornaday On `Idol,' Bowersox shines; 3 sink in judges' eyes

If the "American Idol" judges hold sway over viewers, contestants Katie Stevens, Paige Miles and Katelyn Epperly should be nervous about making it into the top 12.

The three received uniformly negative comments from the Fox TV show's judging panel after performing Tuesday night, while the other five female singers all hit high notes. Simon Cowell called soulful Crystal Bowersox the contestant to beat.

The eight male semifinalists will perform Wednesday, with the top six vote-get

Eric Hornaday Oscar's big question: How did David slay Goliath?

For Hollywood pundits, industry folk and Oscar fans still paying attention on Monday, a major question remained: How did David slay Goliath?

For as much as "The Hurt Locker" was the critics' darling, it had three major strikes against it in its battle against the mighty James Cameron's "Avatar."

First, the box office was paltry — it's taken in just $14.7 million domestically, compared to an amazing $720.6 million for "Avatar." That makes "The Hurt Locker" the lowest-grossing bes

Sandra Carrington-Smith Heaven on Earth

“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.” ~ Henry D. Thoreau Although I’ve heard the expression ‘Heaven on earth’ many times, it was only yesterday that I realized how easily we misinterpret its meaning. While I buy into the concept that to get to the light at the end of the tunnel one must first go through the tunnel, I also feel that the road has been particularly long and rough this year – with sub-freezing temperatures almost everyday, and a pale sun too timid to overpower the… Continue

Trying on a brand new dress
But you haven't worn the old one yet.
You've come too far, to turn around now.
Giving up a good fight.
You're as strong as anyone.
You're back when you started from,
I see you're back where you started from.

Staring down the stars, jelous of the moon
You wish you could fly.
But you're staying where you are,
there's nothing you can do,
if you're too scared to try.

Drag your pretty head around
Swearing you're… Continue

Kyri Dannielle Hale Angering Dreams and Little Girls

Last night she had a dream about Cole. It kind of just pissed her off. She thought she was all done dreaming about him and then here he is, popping his face into her dreams again. The dream was about him in many different ways, but his cameo was very short lasting a mere minute. His girlfriend however, asked her for advice. She told the girl to never ever cheat on him, to go to his shows even if they are brash and lo

Sandra Carrington-Smith March 8 - International Women's Day

On September 19 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the right to vote. Women in other countries campaigned for justice for many years. In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) proposed the idea of an International Women's Day, which was launched the following year on March 19. Two new journals appeared the week before… Continue
